Site spamming?

I can go two ways on this one.

Part of me says so what?  He placed some links to help promote his site.  Why can’t he do this?  He definetly is not the only person doing this.  Did he really do it on his own or is it what he was instructed to do and what he was being payed for.  Is there a bigger cover up by the Times?

The other part of me says that even though Wyspianski is not the only one doing this kind of “advertising” is it really an acceptable way to get your name out there?  I don’t have a problem with going out and making an effort to get your name out there and recognized but this may be crossing the line a little bit.

Check out the link and let me know what you think.

I agree 100% with the author.  I feel strongly that HTML and CSS should both be taught in the classrooms of Journalism schools.  Sure there may be techies, designers, lab folks and production people around a lot of the time but there will be an opportunity when you will wish that you had covered the basics during your undergrad.  Chances are that even while grinding through your day to day routine at come point you will encounter something that will require some basic HTML knowledge.

Google Assignment

When I “Googled” myself I found several articles about me from the Anchorage Daily News, Fairbanks Daily News Miner, Juneau Empire and Seward Phoenix Log.  Most of these articles were archived and from several years ago.  I also found my name in the results from several races that I have done over the past few years.  These races range from local races such as Mt. Marathon, Eagle River Triathlon and the Heart Run to National level races such as the US National Ski Championships and the Klondike Road Relay.  I also find a link to my sisters wedding page (which I am designing).  There are also links to a couple of articles that I wrote for the UAA student newspaper (The Northern Light).  Also found are links to articles on the Alaska Schools Activities Association, the Anchorage School District and the Nordic Ski Association of Anchorage Websites.  There are links to the USA Track and Field, US Ski Team, USA Triathlon, and Federation of International Skiing Websites where I am referenced in several articles.

Intro

Welcome to my “rockin” blog!  My name is John and I am a journalism student at the University of Alaska in Anchorage.  To pay the bills I am a bartender at Suite 100 Restaurant Bar and Lounge in Anchorage.

I am a competitive cross country skier, cross country runner and triathlete.  I am a bit removed from my “glory days,” but I still love to get out there and give it my best shot.
